Crown or veneer? They are not the same thing.

This is the question we get asked most. The short version: a veneer changes how a healthy tooth looks. A crown rebuilds a tooth that is damaged.

Dental crown

Covers the entire tooth. The whole tooth is reduced and the crown is placed over it, like a cap.

  • For teeth that are fractured or badly worn down
  • For teeth with strong, persistent sensitivity
  • Zirconia on back teeth, porcelain on front teeth
  • Priced per unit — $500 USD per crown

Porcelain veneer

Covers only the front surface of the tooth. Less invasive, but it needs a healthy tooth underneath to hold on to.

  • For healthy teeth you want to reshape or whiten
  • Colour, shape, symmetry and spacing
  • Sold as an all-inclusive package for the full smile
  • From $5,700 USD

How do I know if I actually need a crown?

  • More than 60% of my tooth is fractured or broken down.
  • My sensitivity is a 6 or higher out of 10.

If either one is true, you very likely need a crown. If neither is, a porcelain veneer is the less invasive option — and that is what we will recommend. Send us two photos on WhatsApp and Dr. Pinto will tell you which one your case needs before you book anything.

The material matters

Zirconia at the back, porcelain at the front.

We do not use one single material for every tooth. Which one you get depends on what that tooth has to do all day.

Zirconia — back teeth

Your back teeth grind food, so they need the most resistant material available. Zirconia is engineered to resist, not to look pretty: its white reads flatter and harder than a natural tooth. Back there, nobody sees it and it will outlast anything else.

  • Maximum strength for chewing and grinding
  • The right call for heavy bites and teeth grinders

Ceramic / porcelain — front teeth

Front teeth only cut food, they do not grind it, so they do not need that extra strength. Here we use the same ceramic as our porcelain veneers: it covers the whole tooth just the same, but it is far more aesthetic and it matches the veneers next to it, so the smile reads uniform.

  • Blends with your natural teeth and with veneers
  • Translucency and texture, not a flat block of white

Dr. Pinto decides the material tooth by tooth and explains the choice to you before starting — you are never handed a plan you did not understand.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions.

How do I know if I need a dental crown?
Two signs point to a crown rather than a veneer. First, if more than 60% of the tooth is fractured or broken down, there is not enough healthy structure left for a veneer to hold. Second, if you rate your sensitivity at 6 or higher on a scale of 1 to 10, the tooth is usually compromised beyond what a veneer can protect. If neither applies to you, porcelain veneers are the less invasive option — and we will tell you so.
What is the difference between a dental crown and a veneer?
A veneer is a thin shell that covers only the front surface of the tooth, so it needs a healthy tooth underneath. A crown covers the entire tooth: the whole tooth is reduced and the crown is placed over it. That is why crowns are used when there is a fracture or damage that compromises the whole tooth, and veneers are used for aesthetic changes on healthy teeth.
How much does a dental crown cost in Medellín?
Crowns are priced per unit at $500 USD each, not as a closed package. Most patients need one to four crowns — it is very rare for someone to need every tooth crowned. Use the estimator on this page to see the approximate total for your case. The final plan and price are confirmed after the clinical exam and X-rays.
Do you use zirconia or porcelain crowns?
Both, and the choice depends on which tooth is being restored. We use zirconia on the back teeth because the material is far more resistant and those teeth do the grinding — zirconia is built to resist, not for aesthetics, so its white reads flatter and harder. On the front teeth we use ceramic or porcelain: it covers the whole tooth just the same, but it is much more aesthetic and matches porcelain veneers, so the smile looks uniform. Front teeth only cut food, they do not grind it, so the extra strength is not needed there. Dr. Pinto confirms the material for your case during the consultation.
Can I get several crowns done in one trip?
Yes. Crowns follow the same timeline as our porcelain veneers — the procedure takes 3 to 7 days and most international patients plan around 8 days in Medellín. Send us your photos on WhatsApp and we will map out the schedule for your trip before you book anything.
Do you speak English?
Yes — we provide seamless, friendly and prompt English-speaking support by WhatsApp, Instagram, or iMessage, and throughout your visit to the clinic in El Poblado, Medellín.
